1.一般说来，在首字母读音为辅音音素的词前用 a，如 a book(一本书)，a university(一所大学)，a European (一个欧洲人);在首字母读音为元音音素的词前用 an，如 an orange(一个橘子)。例如：
France is a European country.法国是一个欧洲国家。
He has an orange.他有一个橘子。
There is a university in the town.这个城镇有一所大学。
2.在缩略词前，若该缩略词的首字母是元音音素，则应用 an，如 an MP(一位议员)，an SOS (呼救信号)，an X-ray(X光)等;若该缩略词的首字母是辅音音素，则应用 a。例如：
