“老大学精神”总是随着毕业文凭一起离开校园，为了重新找回这种精神，学校给校友写信请求他们为“亲爱的母校”捐款。只有在为一个具体的项目或目标请求捐款时才有可能获得成功。第一封信主要是借助校友对母校的自豪感，请求他们增加捐款数额，一方面是为了抵消通货膨胀，另一方面是为了吸引更高水平的师资。

Difficult choices must be made during difficult times. Increasing inflation rates coupled with reduced tax revenues make the choices of where and how much to give truly difficult. It is especially difficult for those of us who care deeply about Harcourt College and its 140-year tradition of excellence.
