A heavy concrete oil-tank structure placed directly on the seabed without supporting piles. Although cheaper than steel， this is not of vital importance because the structure is only about 10% of the cost of an offshore platform. The superstructure is often steel. The oil tanks， empty， provide buoyancy for floating the platform to its site. All gravity platforms up to 1988 were on firm seabed， either dense sand or very stiff clay， unprepared except for the removal of boulders.
